The distance for this year’s tournament is 3,383 kilometres or 2,102 miles. This is slightly shorter than the 2020 Tour, which had a distance of 3,470 kilometres. A good idea, when you bet on the Tour de France, is to research how long each Stage is. Certain riders perform better over longer distances than short. Second seeded David Goffin of Belgium faces Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Open Sud de France ATP event. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday February 26th, 2021 at 7:00am EST. This will be the first meeting between the two players.
Currently ranked #15, David Goffin will be eager to have a strong season in 2021 after an inconsistent past few years, and regain his spot in the top 10 of the rankings. He had an extremely tough 2020 season, first contracting COVID-19 and then struggling to win matches after his return. His year did not get off to a great start, losing in the First Round both in Adelaide and the Australian Open. He has looked good so far here in Montpellier, getting through a tough three setter over Benjamin Bonzi. He did well to recover from being down there and was striking the ball well towards the end of the match. When he is in form he is very difficult to beat, as he is one of the best all-around baseliners on the ATP Tour.
Tour De France Stage 20
Lorenzo Sonego is currently ranked #36 and has displayed some great tennis recently. After having a breakthrough year in 2020, announcing himself on the world stage with a 6-1, 6-1 thrashing of Novak Djokovic, he has endured a rough start to 2021 and will be hoping to right the ship here. After surviving a tricky three set encounter with Hugo Gaston, he was very impressive against Sebastian Korda, serving extremely well and dominating from the baseline. While he is the underdog on paper, his career is on the upward trajectory unlike Goffin's and seems to be playing with huge confidence. If he serves well it will be difficult for the Belgian to stop him here.
This match has three sets written all over it. While Sonego has been the better player in recent months, the experience of Goffin cannot be discounted. The result can really go either way but I expect Goffin to pull through in a thriller. I would not be surprised to see the Italian win, so the safer bet may be for each player to win a set.
